No more traffic jams?
Traffic jams are a huge problem nowadays and no one seems to be enjoying standing side by side with other sweaty people on a bus for two hours straight, because that's how long a single bus ride across a city often takes. But what can we do to avoid this problem? Yeah, there are trains, trams and subway but not everyone lives nearby. That's why many people use their own cars and that's an even bigger problem.
Yes, you read it right. But what's so wrong about it and why do I make such a big deal out of it, you may ask now. You're also stuck, but with air conditioning, music on the speakers and plenty of space, not a single disadvantage!
Well, the answer is quite easy if you look at it another way, without focusing only on your personal comfort.
Globally, about 15 percent of manmade carbon dioxide comes from cars, trucks, airplanes, ships and other vehicles. The environmental impact of transport is significant, because transport is a major user of energy, and burns most of the world's petroleum. This creates air pollution and is a significant contributor to global warming through emission of carbon dioxide.
A typical passenger vehicle emits about 4600 kilograms of carbon dioxide per year. This assumes the average gasoline vehicle on the road today has a fuel economy of about 10 kilometers per liter and drives around 18 500 kilometers per year. Every liter of gasoline burned creates about 2,5 grams of CO2.
Electric cars are lately becoming more and more popular. People think of it as a perfect alternative, but it's not as colorful as it seems.
Although electric vehicles burn no gasoline and have no tailpipe emissions, producing the electricity used to charge them does generate global warming emissions, but they still emit 50% less greenhouse gas than diesel, so it is recommended to use them, if you're not willing to implement my other pieces of advice below.
If you want to be more "eco", start taking public vehicles to school or work. But why would a bus be better for environment than a personal vehicle? It burns way more gasoline than a single small car after all!
But on the other hand, when you compare 150 cars (because that's how many people an average bus can contain) to one, even better if electric, bus - then it makes a huge difference, doesn't it?
Furthermore, when there is a few kilometer long traffic jam that consists of 750 cars with one passenger in one, it would take you hours to get home! But what if all of these people took a bus instead? There would be only 5 buses on the street and the ride would be over in the blink of an eye. The term of "traffic jam" wouldn't be used anymore.
But the best of the best ways to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is for sure riding either bikes or scooters, and so on. If you don't have any, or you don't know where to leave them before entering school or workplace, it's no longer a problem! There are plenty of self-service and very cheap rental places that you can choose from all around many cities. And the best part of it is that you would never even have to look at a traffic jam again. Everything fast, comfortable, cheap and ecological. And you don't have to work out later at home, because your daily exercises are already done! Looks like a perfect solution!
Summing up, everyday way to school or work doesn't have to be boring and tiring! It's best if you start using bikes, scooters and so on, but if there are none bicycle paths on your way, always choose public transport. You probably need a car if you live in a village and work in a city, but then just buy an electric one. It's not that hard to live more "eco", and it can make a huge difference. Just try!
